  • Adventure in Color the Impressionism of Anita Wolff by Suzanne Blaney

  •

As did Impressionism, Anita Wolff’s style and interpretation of the genre evolved over her many years of creating art and teaching thousands of students.

Inspired by the early French impressionists and the glowing emotional expression of Van Gogh, she grew to maturity in Southern California, an area saturated with the bold color and plein aire philosophy of the early California Impressionists.

Among the several fine teachers of the 20th Century with whom she studied, was the great Russian colorist Sergei Bongart. His philosophies and dynamic color were inculcated into her psyche. However, Wolf adds her own link. Her subject interpretation, use of color and strong execution, add yet another direction to impressionism.

Above all, she says, “... a painting should be created with the soul.”

I am staggered by Anita Wolff’s command of color. Countless times I have seen her come to a student and say, “let’stry this” . . . and see a picture come to life!
